POKEMON GO-ON THE GO
BY ASHER CANDELL
ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR
Don’t pretend like you haven’t played Pokemon Go. We all remember 2016, when the mobile Niantic Pokemon game took the world by storm, and people around the world were searching far and wide for the rarest, strongest Pokemon out in the real world.
It took over so many lives, including mine, and probably yours too at some point. IGN said it was “an incredible can’t-miss social experience,” which sums it up pretty well. Of course, the game isn’t nearly as popular as it once was, but the game still has a very large player base. Every time I go to local parks I always see at least one person walking around on their phone, throwing balls at a purple rat or a bird holding an asparagus.
And recently, that person has more often than not been me. Here’s the thing: I’m a very busy person, I’m working towards graduation, I’m heavily involved in one of the school’s most time-consuming programs, and I also have to go to school every day of the week for 7 full hours. It’s safe to say that even with the beautiful spring weather we’ve been having in Utah recently, I haven’t had the time or motivation to just get outdoors that often.
Luckily, there’s a game for busy lazy nerds like me, and it’s the same one that the world was fawning over years ago. Pokemon Go gets me out and about on the regular. Whenever I have some free time to myself, instead of spending it sleeping or watching TV, I’m outside at the park, or walking down the street, or venturing to a new neighborhood I’ve never been to to locate a new Pokemon. It’s incredible how the game still motivates me to go on walks even though it fell out of vogue so long ago.
“Even though the sheep Pokemon grows up to be ugly, I love it and will cherish the time we have together,” Said Lucy Jensen, who often accompanies me on my Pokemon walks, “All of the little guys you can catch are so funny.” We like going to Draper Park, where we often encounter other players, trying to take over all of the local gyms in the game.
So if you’re like me and can’t find the time or energy to get active sometimes, Pokemon Go is still the game for you. It’s the perfect game for us, so it may be the perfect game for you too. Hop on your phone, boot up your old account with a password made eight years ago and definitely forgot, and go nuts. I guarantee you’ll have a great time.

DRAPER TRAILS:Where are places you can go to hike or walk this spring?
|
DRAPER'S RECREATIONBY REBECCA SMILEY
OUTDOOR RECREATION EDITOR Spring is here! Have you ever wondered what fun things you could do outdoors with friends? The weather is warming up and instead of hanging out inside, we can do so much in the warm sun. Personally, I really enjoy all the trails that are provided in Draper. There are so many trails we have near us that have such beautiful sights. Audrey Floyd, a CCHS student, explains how much she likes “hiking and walking outside” in Draper. The Porter Rockwell trail connects with lots of other trails and can be a perfect trail to bike or walk on with friends. If you haven’t already, there is also the Bear Canyon suspension bridge that would be fun to visit. The City of Draper provides plenty of recreational opportunities with their recreation programs. You could sign up for a certain sport available to teenagers, and even run a 5k or 10k this summer to appreciate nature. There are so many options available on the draperutah.gov website. Sometimes Utah weather can be very unpredictable. In spring especially, there may be cooler or hotter days. It’s hard to predict what the weather will be like. Instead of suffering in the cold on a rainy spring day, it may be easier to enjoy recreational activities indoors. This can be done with the Draper Recreation Center on the mountain. For teenagers specifically, they provide a girls softball league, a fitness class, as well as a swim team to potentially join. If you are interested in more activities and you’re 16 or older, they also provide aerobics, cycling, group fitness classes or fitness 101. These activities would be beneficial if you’re looking to try something new this spring. If you’re looking for things to do with friends, these opportunities would be very fun and potentially relaxing. These activities are wonderful to improve our health. The City of Draper website explains, “With 117 miles of scenic trails and 5,000 acres of open space, Draper features the most trails and largest open space of any city along the Wasatch Front.” We can go hiking, bike riding, horseback riding, and so much more all within Draper. Don’t wait until it’s hot out to start having fun in Draper! POSTED 4/17/2024 |
How to prepare for a Hike:
|
BY WHITNEY RIDDLE
PRO/CON EDITOR SPORTS EDITOR Hiking is probably the most popular recreational activity here in Draper, and I'd guess that many students here at Corner Canyon love climbing and the rewarding views. So, calling all corner canyon hikers! Here is a list of the best hikes near Corner Canyon that you should hike this season. According to AllTrails, the top hikes near Corner Canyon are; Ghost Falls, Lone Rock, Canyon Hollow, Clarks Trail, Three Falls Trail, Brocks Point, Potato Hill, Bonneville Shoreline, Jungle Trail, Peak View Trail, and of course the Suspension Bridge. Many of these trails connect and create great hiking loops. For example, a great loop with many different views would be Canyon Hollow, Brocks Point, Ann's, and Potato Hill Loop. This loop is a moderate 5.8-mile hike and takes about 2 hours to complete. Ghost Falls is a very popular Hike. If you go to the falls in the spring, you can get the beautiful Ghost Fall, and you'll see why it gets that name. The hike is moderate, 2.9 miles round trip, and takes about an hour and a half to complete. I highly recommend this hike, especially with a group of friends. The Suspension Bridge is another very popular hike, and I’m sure you've either done it before or heard of other students' experiences. The Suspension Bridge is a great starter hike a lot of people think it's the number one hike in Draper. The hike only takes about an hour and is 2 miles round trip. If you’ve done this hike before, I recommend it again, but this time instead of just going to the suspension bridge, find the purple bridge which is a trail just off the main route by the suspension bridge. If you cross the purple bridge and continue for a bit longer, you can find a great view of the valley. Tess McBride, one of the presidents of the Climbing Club said that Alien Tower is her favorite hike because she loves how she can take her dog and it has lots of little trail areas. She also says it's a great hike for families. Kaitlyn Blackham and Student here at CCHS, says her favorite hike near the Corner Canyon is the Cave Tunnel. She likes it because it's something she can hike whenever easily, it's short and has an amazing view. I hope the weather clears up soon so my fellow hikers can get out on the trails! Be safe and have fun! POSTED 4/9/2024 |
